Software Flight Control Goals
Monday, 23 January 2006
UAV Software Development Guidelines for Control System:

The following technical document outlines the UAV software control system specifications being developed by ISP Toolz. The UAV software will relay on GPS with a second backup navigational system consisting of radio homing to return the UAV to home port in the event of a primary or secondary GPS failure. The following systems will be discussed in this document.

UAV Software Features
  • Navigation and Flight Controls
  • Camera Controls
  • System Monitoring
The system will use provide the following functions to the ground station.

UAV Control System Specifications

The UAV control system will provide navigation for the airship. The navigational controls will allow preprogrammed routes using GPS. The routes will be programmed prior to departure or can be modified in flight by the ground control station. Radio communications will use nationwide cellular service for commands and FM for long range operation in areas not covered by cellular communications. The airship will have a maximum altitude capability of 1000ft AGL. The system will be controlled by an onboard computer and control pod. The control pod will have a maximum weight of no more than 18lbs. The maximum payload weight limit is 20lbs. The UAV control system will use a miniture full system computer, dual USB GPS and radio communications system (FM). Routes will be uploaded to the UAV over the FM or cellular link as available in a failover configuration. The route will be sent encrypted. The control channel will be encrypted. Keying materials will be loaded prior or updated in flight to ensure proper communications that are secure.

Exact specification on the format of the routing request will not be disclosed but will consist of the actual GPS waypoints that the UAV should follow. The following options for routes will be available in the software.

  • Hard Coded Flight Path (Read Only Pre Launch Flight Program)
  • Live Flight Control (Controlled by Ground Station)
  • Hybrid (Pre Programmed Flight Path with Ground Station Deviation Authorized)
  • Surveillance Mode (Area Watch)
  • Hover Mode (Low Power Long Range Hover and Air Parking Mode)
  • Return to Base Command
  • Emergency Landing Command

Camera and Control Systems will allow the following commands.

  • Camera Instant Joystick Commands
  • Target Tracking
  • Record Feature
  • Traffic Reporting
  • Enemy Location
  • IR Scanning
  • Night Camera Mode

System monitoring features will provide the following to the ground control center.

  • On Map Current Location Reporting
  • Altitude Reporting
  • Speed Reporting
  • Fuel Reporting
  • Remaining Control Time Aloft
  • In Air Wind Reporting

Software end user specifications will be provided in the ground station specification documentation.

Additional specification request can be directed to ISP Toolz research and development team by emailing rdteam@isptoolz.com.

The information in this report is public in nature. All encryption methods and proprietary information has not been included to ensure the security of the operators of the UAV. Safety mechanisms also have been removed at this time. Information on control systems and the frequencies, encryption methods and additional specifications may be requested from ISP Toolz R&D team.
